Best afternoon tea in Brighton?

The most sublime, the big wow, the serious yummy…and yes, the best afternoon tea in Brighton and Hove (unless you tell me otherwise). I found it a few years ago and have decided to share in my knowledge but please don’t tell everyone as I hate waiting for a table*. I gigi, who you know that I adore, has the most delightful upstairs café in its General Store. The food is heavenly and on my most recent visit (it had been a while since moving across town) I thought they had updated their menu…and noticed that their Rarebit is now known as the BEST Rarebit…based on the owner’s top secret recipe. And yes it is the BEST.

This time I was there for the afternoon tea and to share some civilised time with my parents and Little G. *We did have to wait for a table, but the lovely waitress made the whole experience so pleasant, that it wasn’t a problem (she spotted that people were about to pay and told us it would be 5 minutes and she’d hold if for us if we wanted to pop out until then…she understood that patient waiting with a toddler can be a big ask). We then had the crème de la crème table in the beautiful window to watch the world go by and enjoy the best afternoon tea going.

We had the cream tea and a slice of carrot cake…with Earl Grey tea, a flat white and a glass of apple juice that had bubbles blown it in (well Little G is a toddler and she was having the best time). It was most definitely one of the best afternoon tea experiences and I recommend seeking it out…though be prepared to wait for coveted table…I promise it’s worth it.

  1. Ditto the last comment!
I’m just home from the school run and the kettle is on for an earl grey and a slice of sponge, not quite the same standard, but I will be using my pink blossom bone china cup, saucer and side plate (from Grandma’s house!). Hope that gives it the more refined edge!!

    1. Only problemo is prob lack of buggy space but there is a little outside space out the back by the outdoor loo…the staff are so fab I’m sure they’d let you do that? Or it’s baby sling time! Would love to cake it up with you 😉 x
